ABOUT ME

More about Leila

That one time, in Bosnia

Leila grew up in Bosnia during the early 90s. She is a child of war, and like many other children who have grown up in those environments, Leila is now determined to be a part of community development and engagement.

A global refugee

Ask her and she will tell you endless stories of her experience settling in Australia. Leila was not a refugee in Australia, having been born in sunny Sydney while her parents were on holiday back in the 80s. She is one of the lucky few who attained Australian citizenship by birth (before the law changed) and her Australian migration story is coloured by her determined insistence that she was always Australian (despite what all the other kids said!).

Leila's experience of being a refugee and an asylum seeker started when she entered Croatia in the summer of 1994 through a miserable forest (chased by soldiers). A quick fifteen months in a processing camp in Croatia, and her family were able to obtain visas to Australia, brining home a young expatriate child who spoke no English.

An intrepid traveler

Leila has some serious FOMO. If there is a cruise ship departing, she wants to sail on it. If there is a train journey, she wants to go (and film it, too).
She takes with her Husband and Bunny, and makes them partake in her crazy adventures.
Their travel guide on Japan (with Children) is now available on YouTube and ebook.

An obsessed baker

Raised by chef's and fine cooks, Leila has been an obsessed baker since childhood. She has sought to share those recipes with her daughter (and the world).
Her first cookbook was published in 2017, exploring the culinary heritage of post war Bosnia.
She has been hired by speciality cook shops to present seminars on different cuisines from the region and teach cooking classes.
Her Instagram feed, her text messages, and her dreams, are always full of delicious concoctions to be shared with friends and family.
